Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) in Columbus, Ohio

Some arrive straight from ambulatory detox in the same building and need daily contact while early recovery settles. Others have been discharged from an inpatient or residential program somewhere else, and a few hours a week would be too steep a drop. For some, intensive outpatient was tried and did not hold. And for some people the assessment finds PHP can stand in for a residential stay, because home at night is safe.

The day is built from groups, some of them therapy and some of them teaching, run by licensed clinicians who draw on cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy and, where it fits, 12-step facilitation. Topics run from recovery and relapse prevention to handling emotions, coping skills, mental health education and healthier daily habits. Once a week you also sit down one to one with your therapist, and your treatment plan is written around you.

PHP here is a mental health program as much as an addiction program. It has three tracks: mental health on its own, dual diagnosis for mental health and substance use together, and substance use. Depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder and PTSD are treated in it. The nurse practitioner handles medication management at least once a week, and additional services are available based on clinical need. Registered nurses in the building help with medication questions and support the coordination of your care.

When your treatment team agrees you are ready, the step down happens in the same building: intensive outpatient in Columbus, three to five days a week, then outpatient. Before you leave PHP, the team plans that step with you, and it can also cover outpatient therapy and community recovery support such as AA or NA. How long PHP lasts depends on the goals you set with the team in your first few days.
